(The Village at Heaven’s Edge) [Hangeul, Romanization & Translation]

Finally got to meet Ruvin, and see him perform live in Manhattan, thanks to Educhora’s Sullen Bear Productions, who arranged the show at Space Gabi on Fifth Ave.

An impressive solo acoustic performance, sometimes touching and poignant, but also with a sense of humor. I really admire his guitar technique, but what surprised me was his voice – smooth and sweet, but when needed he has the strength to project and his voice magnificently fills the room.

Ruvin wrote this moving song for his mom, who passed away a couple of years ago from cancer. Thanks to Dr. Chris Choi for the lovely English translation.

(The Village at Heaven’s Edge)

eo-dum-I nae-ryeo-an-jeun gil wi-ro dal-bi-che bl-chin na-eui keu-rim-ja

dae-na-mu su-p’eul ji-na o-reu-ni ha-neur-gwa ba-ro da-eun eon-deo-gi

p’ul-peor-le ma-jeo su-meul ju-gi-go i-ya-gi-e kwi-gi-o-ryeo

meom-chun-deut-han i kong-kan-eui pam ha-neu-ren beo-ri ha-na dul neu-reo-ga-ne

na-do i-reot-ke jeo byeor-i doi-eo keu-dae-eui eol-gul-eur bi-chu-ge doi-myeon

ha-neul-gwa da-eun ma-eul i go-se-seo beol-deul-eur bo-myeo nae i-reum-eul bur-leo-ju-o

shi-gan-I heur-leo ha-neur-i bar-ga-o-myeon nae keu-rim-ja-do byeor-do sa-ra-jyeo

keu ja-ri-e meo-mur-leo is-seo-do seo-ro-reul ba-ra-bol su eop-seul ppun

na-do i-reot-ke jeo byeor-i doi-eo keu-dae-eui eol-gul-eur bi-chu-ge doi-myeon

ha-neul-gwa da-eun ma-eul i go-se-seo beol-deul-eur bo-myeo nae i-reum-eul bur-leo-ju-o

Translation:
Ruvin – The Village at Heaven’s Edge

With my shadow on the dark path lit by the moonlight
We walk past the bamboo fields up to the hill touching the sky

Even bugs hold their breath, listening to our stories
Time stands still in this night sky as more stars come out

When I become a star and light your face
Will you call my name, watching the stars in this village at heaven’s edge?

The sky brightening with time will mean no shadow or stars
But we’ll stay put; we just won’t be able to see each other

When I become a star and light your face
Will you call my name, watching the stars in this village at heaven’s edge?
