오지은 (Oh Ji-eun) – 테이블보만 바라봐 (Staring at the Tablecloth) Hangeul, Romanization & Translation

At a sleepy but elegant café in Myeongdong I told the barrista in a combination of broken Korean, hopeful English, and probably useless Portuguese how much I enjoyed the wonderful Brazilian music that was playing. He didn’t say a word, and to my surprise ran off. Just as I was thinking, “What the… he didn’t even take my order!” He came running from the back room with the CD cover to show me. I didn’t know the performer but it was very nice.

Brazilian bossa nova is very popular in Seoul, as in many other places around the world. If you visit any café or restaurant, you are bound to hear this wonderful music. And many Korean musicians take up this beautiful style and make their own impressions – as Oh Ji-eun and Lee Sang-soon do here with this remarkable duet. And it’s such an adorable, shy love song.

Oh Ji-eun  – Staring at the Tablecloth

Today is the third time meeting you
I like you more and more
Yet I don’t know much about you
Don’t know how to handle you

Today is the third time meeting you
I still don’t know you well
Your smile like an orange
Suddenly it’s desirable to see

A Cappucino for me
And I’ll have an Americano
Until the coffee comes
There are no words
Feeling awkward
Just staring at the tablecloth

Today what to wear to meet you
I tried on a new dress
Wouldn’t look like much
Not much to look at

Today you came out wearing blue
The dress looked so good
Made your white skin astonishing
I really don’t deserve to see

Soft foam
Bittersweet coffee
I am taking a sip
Eyes up
Got a taste
Just a taste
Just staring at the tablecloth

You’re looking over the tablecloth
Maybe I’m not that much fun
I’m looking over the tablecloth
If you would only hear
The sound of my heart

Perhaps you’d like to see that movie
What if I’ve seen it with someone else
That would be a shame
Actually, I’ve missed you
And I’ve missed you
Just staring at the tablecloth
