넬 (Nell) – Dear Genovese lyrics [Hangeul, Romanization & Translation]

I did a small research about “Genovese” and found out that there’s a psychological phenomenon called “Genovese syndrome”, or widely known as “Bystander effect”. It is a case where a person sees a crime takes place and doesn’t offer any help to the victim when other people are present. The reasons behind the phenomenon are ambiguity (whether it’s an emergency or non-emergency situation), cohesiveness (cohesiveness, defined by Rutkowski et al, refers to an established relationship [friends, acquaintances] between two or more people. The probability of the victim being helped is greater when there’s a similarity between the helper and the victim. Example: when the victim wears a certain soccer team’s jersey and a bystander who happens to be a fan of the team passes by, he’ll more likely to help the victim), and diffusion of responsibility (the assumption of there are other people, or  more qualified ones, in the crowd who can help the victim, or fear of facing legal procedures extended from the cases). “Genovese” is taken from Kitty Genovese (1935-1964) who became a victim of murder and her neighbours didn’t give quick response to her scream for help.

This song tells the story from the perspective of a witness, who failed to give help, and wishes he had more courage to do so.

넬 (Nell) – Dear Genovese

Da-ga-ga-ryeo haett-ji-man da-ri-ga eol-eo-but-eo meom-chweo-seo beo-ryeott-ji

Ta-in-eui nun-eul tong-hae ba-ra-bo-myeo na-eui nun-eul gam-a-beo-ryeoss-eo

Nan ma-chi a-mu il-do il-eo-nan jeok eobs-da-neun deut

Ga-myeon-eui dwi-e sum-eo oe-myeon-ha-go iss-eo

Na-e-ge yong-gi-reul jweo

Go-tong-seu-reob-deo-ra-do jin-sil-eul ma-ju-hal su itt-neun

Geu him-eul nae-ge jweo

Jit-eun eo-dun sok-e-seo nal ilh-eo-ga-go iss-eo

Neo-eui geu haet-bul-eul deul-eo na egil-eul balk-hyeo-jweo

Sil-mang-seu-reob-ge-do bul ggeo-jin nae bang-an-e ung-keu-ryeo iss-eott-ji

Shi-gan-i ji-nal-su-rok jeom-jeom mu-dyeo-jyeo gatt-go ma-chim-nae mo-deun geon ggeut-na-beo-ryeott-ji

Nan ma-chi a-mu il-do il-eo-nan jeok eobs-da-neun deut

Mo-deun-geol oe-myeon-ha-go sal-a-ga-go iss-eo

Na-e-ge yong-gi-reul jweo

Go-tong-seu-reob-deo-ra-do jin-shil-eul ma-ju-hal su itt-neun

Geu him-eul nae-ge jweo

Jit-eun eo-dum sok-e-seo nal ilh-eo-ga-go iss-eo

Neo-eui geu haet-bul-eul deul-eo nae gil-eul balk-hyeo-jweo

Na-e-ge yong-gi-reul jweo

Go-tong-seu-reob-deo-ra-do jin-shil-eul beo-tyeo-nael su itt-neun

Geu him-eul nae-ge jweo

Jit-eun eo-dum sok-e-seo nal ilh-eo-ga-go iss-eo

Neo-eui geu haet-bul-eul deul-eo nae gil-eul balk-hyeo-jweo

Translation

I was going to approach you but my legs froze up
I looked at you through stranger’s eyes and closed my own
As if nothing has happened
I am hiding behind a mask, turning away

Give me courage
Even if it’s painful, give me the strength to face the truth
I am losing myself in the thick darkness
Lift up your torch and light my way

Disappointed, I was balled up in my dark room
As time went by, my senses became more and more dull
In the end, everything was over
As if nothing has happened
I was living on while turning away from everything

Give me courage
Even if it’s painful, give me the strength to face the truth
I am losing myself in the thick darkness
Lift up your torch and light my way

Give me courage
Even if it’s painful, give me the strength to endure through the truth
I am losing myself in the thick darkness
Lift up your torch and light my way

  1. This song reflects our society these days too well, everybody turns their backs on each other when there are people in need of help. Thank you so much for your research.

  2. I think my favorite, even though that’s something hard to choose in an album full of great songs. During the preview, this one stood out the most…even though I wasn’t sure if it was a instrumental. Hearing it now, it indeed is a song I could get lost to. Or cry to. Not cause it’s obviously sad as some of the other songs (where his vocals are very sorrowful). But it makes me emotional without realizing it.
